Once you find the right distance and center, it’s time to decide where to mount your projector. If it’s a number, you can multiply your throw distance with the horizontal width of your screen to find the perfect spot to place the projector. It is the distance of the tip of the projector lens from the screen. You can use the throw distance of your projector to decide how close or far you can place the projector.
I have a Sanyo PLV-Z4 and it is atop the equipment rack in the back/right of my room. It's approximately even with the screen top and about 40" offset to the right. Distance is roughly 18' onto a 92" screen. The pj should be mounted about 18 inches below the ceiling.

Two key engineering decisions affect a projector's contrast. First is the native black level of the imaging devices themselves. If the imagers can only make light gray instead of something closer to black, overall dark scenes will have a washed-out haze over the image that's clearly visible when viewing in a dark environment. Deep native blacks, on the other hand, allow the projector to reveal fine gradations of light in dark areas and provide added dimensional realism and punch to every scene. For shorter throw projectors placed near screens close up images better, but if it longer, placement matters less as there’s no distortion even when viewed from farther away.
If you have no choice, you can find a table or shelf that’s near the suggested height, and make angle adjustments until your image is centered. Adjust the projector's angle carefully to avoid alignment issues — you want to avoid tilting it as much as possible for the best results. A ceiling mount is a safer, more permanent option and keeps clear of the furniture. But it’s going to take some crawlspace or ceiling work and it’s designed to be permanent, so you can’t have any plans to move the projector around afterward. You should start by taking a minute or two to get the image relatively close to accurate before doing any fine adjustments. As you go through this arduous process, know that you will have to revisit each adjustment multiple times.

Horizontal lens Shift: How far off to the side?
Next, you need to determine the exact location the ceiling plate should be mounted. Your goal here is to completely assemble the mount while the projector is still sitting on the ground. As you can see in the image below, that distance was about 6” for this install. Carry over that measurement to where you marked the ideal lens placement on the ceiling earlier in the install. In this install, that would mean that I simply measure back from the lens mark six inches, and that’s where the front of the ceiling plate should be. If the ceiling plate isn’t centered side-to-side with the projector lens, you will also need to take into account that distance.

In this simulation , the projector on the left would require a higher lumen output to achieve the same image brightness because of sunlight from the windows. Note that brighter is not necessarily better with home theater projectors. Too much brightness in a dark theater can lead to viewer fatigue, and the brighter you go the harder it is to maintain lower black level and superior contrast. This is why many premium projectors regarded as having the best contrast and deepest blacks come in with ratings of less than 2,000 ANSI lumens, though projectors intended for bright-room viewing may go to 3,500 lumens or more. Using your manual as a guide, decide on how large you want your image to be, and calculate your throw distance.
This was true even after turning the Color Space setting to On, which helped tame some of the oversaturation but did not fix it completely. With these observations, Formovie would do well to improve the CMS and grayscale system with a few simple changes. One would be making the Color Space menu options either On or Off, Auto is not needed if it does not perform conversion. Another would be making it so that the 11-point white balance adjustment is not global and can be unique per picture mode. On the other hand, it's fantastic that this unit has so much control and ability to adjust the picture, and I would love to see more manufactures go this route as well.
Input lag is often left off projector spec sheets and is usually only mentioned for specialty gaming projectors, which tout input lag as low as 8 to 16 milliseconds. Many general home theater projectors havelag in the 50 to 100 ms range or higher, which is suitable only for casual gaming at best. Input lag describes the time delay that occurs between the moment when the projector receives the signal for a particular frame of video and when that image actually hits the screen.
Do not be tempted to proceed with a home theater installation before doing detailed planning of your home theater room design. Inappropriate plans can affect the theater experience but can also lead to costly mistakes. Even though this article concentrates mainly on the dedicated home theater room design, most of the principles discussed still apply in a shared environment. The lens of the projector should be parallel to the center of the screen if you’re using a vertical offset. Otherwise, don’t believe in this misconception, as it doesn’t apply to affordable projectors with no vertical offset.
Keystone Image Correction – Using the Keystone Correction feature it may be possible to fix the image proportions. It provides a way to make sure the sides of the image are as close to a perfect rectangle as possible. Sometimes the projector-to-screen angle results in an image that is wider at the top than it is on the bottom, or taller on one side than the other. Some projectors provided for both horizontal and vertical correction, while some only provide a vertical correction. If the projector is table mounted, one way to correct this further if Keystone correction can’t is to place the projector on a higher platform so that is it more directly in line with the screen.
